In Tie Fighter you play the role of a starfighter for the tyrannical Empire in a game based on the classic LucasFilms production Star Wars. It is your duty to complete seven tours of duty (Battles) so the Empire might better tighten its stranglehold on the galaxy. The seven tours of duty are comprised of four or more missions each. Missions include search/destroy, capture, rescue and defend missions. The missions have stated and secret objectives. Several missions require the pilot to fly as part of a flight group, which adds to the fun, and in some cases, the pilot has the ability to command his wingmen, in order to strike several targets (or one big one.)

Your opponents include the Rebels, two races at war with each other, pirates and traitorous Imperial forces. Besides allowing the player to fly the TIE fighters, TIE bombers, and TIE interceptors seen in the films, the game also adds new craft with shields, weaponry, and hyperdrives. Instead of constantly fighting against the Rebels, many missions deal with the elimination of pirates and other criminals, as well as civil wars, traitorous Imperials, and otherwise maintaining order in the galaxy.

In PC Gamer's May 1997 issue, TIE Fighter Collector's CD-ROM ranked #1 in a top 50 greatest games of all time list. In their 2007 list, the TIE Fighter Collector's CD-ROM ranked third of the top 50 greatest games of all time.
